suffering Trials and Difficulties

Many of us in this season have weathered difficult storms, and some have suffered great loss. It takes a lot to process, and asking the big “Why” question isn't very productive; it can lead us down paths of introspection, even into self-pity. That is not to condemn, but it is our natural response to difficult situations.

But did not the Gospel writer John say, These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." John 16:33

Peter also wrote, “Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you” (1 Peter 4:12).

Finally, James wrote, "Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness." (James 1:2-3)

So we can conclude that suffering is part and parcel of life in this world, especially for those who follow Jesus; it is a necessary part of our journey of salvation.

I am writing this from a hospital bed, where I have been for 3 weeks after suffering several heart attacks, in extreme pain and close to death at times. And yet I have also known what it means to know “The God of All Comfort” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4). When I read that early in my painful journey, I told the Lord, "I do not know you in this way; would you show me?"

And, faithful to His word, He showed me His comfort when I thought I was about to die, and He sent a faithful, believing nurse to pray with me and agree with me that I wasn’t going to die. That was when the Glory of God fell, and He miraculously delivered me from a tormenting spirit. Immediately, my heart rhythm returned to normal, and the pain disappeared. Comfort came from a welcome source who, despite the risk of losing her job, faithfully followed the Lord's leading and prayed for me.

In such a short time, the Lord has revealed aspects of His character I had never experienced but now know and appreciate, and I can call upon Him in ways I couldn't before. Experiencing His goodness has also deepened my faith and trust in Him.

I have found this to be true as well: “All things work together for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28). The enemy has tried to kill me many times throughout my life and to snuff out the purposes of God, but the Lord has made it so that I should live rather than die, so that I may fulfil the call on my life.

So, in conclusion, if you are going through the hardest trials or tribulations, as many of us who believe in Jesus are, then first, you are not alone, and second, it will come to pass, and the Lord will prove His word to you. Take courage and do not be afraid. Do not let the enemy gain a foothold in your life; keep trusting in your Saviour; you will not be disappointed or put to shame.
