Thames Angel

After taking the car for an MOT, I was walking back home along a road parallel with the Thames estuary and was inspired by its sparkling panorama—plus the fact that a seer friend had seen an angel standing out over the estuary—so I felt inspired to write as follows …..
As I think of all the bloodshed
That’s happened through the centuries
The rugged tower of London
English monarchs and their enemies
It all now seems so far away
On this cherry blossom day
As I walk along the bank
Of the Thames
I look now to the left of me
And gaze upon the estuary
Sky blue of such intensity
The North Sea its destiny
So sparkling in its density
So thankful that its maker
Is my friend!
Like a pale blue velvet ribbon
A soft blue line on the horizon
No more the hostile rhythms
Now paragliders gliding
No longer the route to prison
Tied up victims gagged and gliding
I wonder if the blueness ever ends
I see now William the Conqueror
Rocking up on all his ships
Aggressive words of powerful
Invasion on his lips
Now families embarking
On sunny pleasure trips
Families with leisure time to spend
Then over all this scene
Stands a mighty angel
Towering in the sky
So powerful, so stable
A sign to all the city
Of the wonders God is able
To do with heaven’s armies
That he sends
I stand in awe and wonder
At just how many centuries
This warrior has been standing
Guarding this great estuary
This gate to the island
This supernatural sentry
Imposingly, impressively
It stands
So many books were written
Of characters so legendary
Artists badly bitten
By bullies that were predatory
But sitting by the river
Is bringing out the best of me
So peaceful sitting here
Just by the Thames
I look now to the left of me
And gaze upon the estuary
Sky blue of such intensity
The North Sea its destiny
So sparkling in its density
So thankful that its maker
Is my friend!
